XBlast Page

Unfortunately I haven't got time anymore to play XBlast, therefore I won't update the XBlast related pages for some time.

This page is dedicated to XBlast, the best DynaBlaster/Bomberman for X you can find. A new version (2.6.1) has just recently come out and you can find it at sunsite.unc.edu under /pub/Linux/games/arcade. At the moment this points to this.

However, I made some additional files (64 levels, 10 bomb-styles, and 1 new shrink) which may be of interest to you. A couple of them are already present in the new release (though with older versions) but most of them aren't. I will see if Oliver Vogel is willing to take some of them into the next release.

  • Levels.
    You can download the single levels on my Levels page. The installation is really simple, you only have to copy all the levels into the directory "path/XBlast-2.6.1/Levels/Levels_stn" and the file data.stn.c into "path/XBlast-2.6.1" (don't forget to rename it to data.c), where path is, where your copy of XBlast resides. These instructions are valid if you're using the EPFL-version, which I strongly recommend, as it has many extras. You can get it on the XBlast Center homepage.

    But first take a look at the names of the levels in case you already have a level with the same name from someone else. I tried not to use an already existing name, but since I can't know all levels that float around somewhere that may happen. If this is so, I would appreciate it if you could tell me and maybe also give me the place where I can find this other level.

  • Players.
    If you're interested, you can take a look at the local players.

  • Dictionary.
    A dictionary with the most important terms.

  • Links.
    Naturally this page isn't the only one dedicated to XBlast, and you can find the others (or at least many of them) on this page.

If you have an older version of XBlast, the following paragraph might be of help to you. However, I was unable to compile the latest version on an SGI. If you have found out a trick to do so, then please let me know. Additionally, I am able to compile on SuSE-Linux (6.4), but the game crashes rather frequently with a memory-error. If the same happened to you and you managed to overcome this, then I would be grateful for a hint.

Some installation help: If you are compiling XBlast on an SGI with the native compiler and get some weird error messages concerning "demo.c" and the "make" crashes, then there are two things you can do to get XBlast to work:

  • You switch to "gcc", which is done by inserting the following into the Imakefile, or copying the Imakefile to some Imakefile.new and doing the changes there:
    /*
    * Added by suggestion from Yves Bresson.
    */
    CC = gcc
    CCOPTIONS =

    Do the "xmkmf -a" as usual. And then you have to look for "-nostdlib" in all the Makefiles and remove it. Now a simple "make" should be enough to finish the compilation.

  • Or you edit the file "demo.c" and replace all occurences of "rindex" with "strrchr" (solution from Oliver Vogel). You don't have to change anything else.
